8 Fun Ways to Get Kids to Help with Chores (Plus a Free Printable!)

Discover fun ways to get kids involved in chores—and a free printable for age-appropriate tasks!

With spring in the air, I'm thinking about spring cleaning—which is always much easier when the kids are on board too! It turns out there are plenty of things our kids can help with around the house—even our littlest ones can assist with tasks like picking up toys, matching socks, and making their bed. To help you get started, I've created a free printable to guide you in assigning age-appropriate chores for your kids. This handy tool can make it easier to get them involved and excited to pitch in!

While getting kids to do household chores can sometimes be a bit challenge, it’s an important part of teaching responsibility and life skills. If you’re struggling to get your little ones involved, check out these eight creative ways to get them excited about helping out around the house.

1. Make It Fun with Games

Transform chores into a game! Whether it’s setting a timer to beat the clock or turning a cleanup into a scavenger hunt, making chores fun can keep kids engaged. A little friendly competition can go a long way!

2. Give Them Choices

Kids like to feel in control. Offer them a choice between tasks (e.g., "Do you want to vacuum or fold the laundry?") to give them some autonomy while still keeping the house tidy.

3. Use Positive Reinforcement

Praise them when they complete tasks, big or small. Positive reinforcement can motivate kids to continue helping and build good habits.

4. Set a Routine

Children thrive on routines, so make chores part of their daily schedule. Whether it’s setting aside time after school or assigning specific tasks on certain days, consistency helps them understand what’s expected.

5. Break Tasks Into Smaller Steps

If a chore feels overwhelming, break it down into smaller, manageable steps. For example, instead of saying, “Clean your room,” try “Pick up your toys,” followed by “Make your bed.” This makes tasks feel less daunting.

6. Let Them Be Helpers

You don’t always have to give kids big chores. Sometimes, just having them help you while you clean can be enough. For example, ask them to hand you supplies or hold the broom while you sweep—getting them involved makes the process more enjoyable for everyone.

7. Use a Chore Chart

A chore chart or checklist can help kids stay organized and track their progress. You can even offer a reward for completing all the tasks in a week. This visual aid can be a great motivator!

8. Show Them How It’s Done

Modeling the right way to do chores can help kids learn the process. Show them how to properly fold laundry or load the dishwasher, and they’ll feel more confident when it’s their turn.
