Here are ten things you can do to get ready:
- Mow your lawn one last time to keep the grass healthy during the winter.
- Clear your gutters from debris to prevent overflowing during heavy rain.
- Remove any dead trees or branches that could cause damage during heavy snow or high winds.
- Cover your air conditioner condenser box to protect it from ice and snow.
- Remove and drain your outdoor hose, then cover the faucet with either a fabric sock or plastic/Styrofoam cover.
- Change your smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries and test the detectors. Review your fire evacuation plan with your family.
- Install a programmable thermostat to save money and prevent freezing pipes. If you plan on leaving home for an extended period, make sure the thermostat is set to at least 65 degrees.
- Have your chimney checked by a professional if you plan to use your fireplace. Restock your firewood if you have a wood-burning fireplace.

- Prepare an emergency kit with bottled water, blankets, flashlights, a battery-powered radio, and snacks. Consider adding medication, shelf-stable foods, an extra change of clothing, a charging source for your phone, and a generator if you live in an area with heavy snow. Keep an extra shovel handy too.
