Throughout May, Mid-Continent Public Libraries presents an array of events tailored for children

From story time sessions to craft workshops, there is something for every young reader to enjoy. Join us for interactive storytelling sessions that will spark your child's imagination and creativity. Dive into the world of art and crafts with our hands-on workshops where children can explore their artistic side. Let your little ones embark on a journey of learning and fun at Mid-Continent Public Libraries this May!




Early Literacy

Sensory Sensitive Story time: Experience a special storytelling event that celebrates the unique abilities of every child. This inclusive gathering provides a relaxed atmosphere, featuring soft lighting, gentle music, and interactive elements. Geared towards children aged 3-5 and their caregivers, registration is required for all attendees.

  • East Lee’s Summit Branch - 2nd Thursday every month 2:00 p.m.

Story time in the Park: The Library takes story time outdoors! Join the dedicated story time team at a nearby park for tales, music, and exciting activities. Bring along blankets for extra coziness. All ages are welcome. Check out their website for specific park locations and addresses.

Play and Learn: Delve into a distinctive preschool play session designed to captivate young minds and foster early literacy skills. Enjoy thrilling and enriching activities while socializing with fellow preschoolers and caregivers. The flexible format allows you to join and depart at your convenience. Suitable for all age groups.

Art & STEM

Kids Create Art: Time to get creative! The materials will be supplied, you just need to bring your imagination! Suitable for ages 6 and above. Pre-registration required.

  • South Independence Branch - Wednesday, May 29 6:00 p.m

Mad Science Presents the Realm of Insects: Perfect for children between the ages of 7 and 12. Step into the captivating realm of insects! Uncover their remarkable flying abilities, unique vision, and tactics for self-defense against predators. Delve into the concept of camouflage and the beneficial role bugs play in our ecosystem. 

  • Blue Springs North Branch - Saturday, May 25 10:30 a.m.

Kids STEAM: Children ages 8 and above can engage in educational play with STEAM games and activities at the Library! Dive into science, technology, engineering, art, and math adventures. Register only the children who will be participating. 

  • North Independence Branch - Monday, May 20 2:00 p.m.
  • East Lee’s Summit Branch - Wednesday, May 22 3:30 p.m.




Performances & Entertainment

Kids Games: Come join the Library for some card and board game fun! We have options for all tastes - whether you prefer team play or a bit of healthy competition, want to explore something new, or stick to old favorites. No matter what you choose, it's guaranteed to be a blast! Registration is required for participating children aged 8 and up.

Shout Hooray for Spring with Mr. Stinky Feet: Embrace the vibrant hues and lively melodies of spring with a thrilling performance by Kansas City's beloved children's entertainer, Jim "Mr. Stinky Feet" Cosgrove. Get ready for an electrifying and engaging show where you can sing, dance, and revel in the joy of music at the Library! Suitable for ages 4 and above.

The Eximious Mike’s Feats of Brawn and Balance: Witness the transformation of the impossible into the possible! Experience the astounding talents of The Eximious Mike as he blends classic strongman techniques with modern hand balancing skills in an awe-inspiring performance. Prepare to be amazed by incredible displays of strength and balance, accompanied by uplifting messages that will ignite your drive to reach your full potential. Suitable for ages 6 and above.

The Silver Snout Variety Show: Come join Martin City Melodrama for a delightful showcase of whimsical dog parody songs, fairy tales, and sketches featuring charming senior dogs rescued from nearby animal shelters. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with these lovable dogs and gain insight into the significance of backing local animal shelters. Suitable for ages 6 and above.
