The Great Lakes Children's Museum is a treasure trove of educational experiences, meticulously designed to engage young minds. One of the standout features is their unwavering attention to detail. As someone who works in education, I quickly recognized the thoughtful incorporation of labels such as up, down, next to, inside, outside, and so on. These directional cues are not just scattered around the museum but are purposefully integrated to enhance the learning journey of every child who visits.

A particularly remarkable area is the little garden outside of the Keeper's Quarters. This space is a testament to the museum's commitment to creating an enriching environment. The garden is a multifaceted educational tool, offering opportunities for letter recognition, color matching, number sequencing, and more. It’s designed to be interactive, encouraging children to explore and learn through hands-on experiences. Whether a child is identifying different plants by their labels or matching colors and shapes, the garden provides a natural and engaging way to develop important cognitive skills.

The Great Lakes Children's Museum exemplifies how educational spaces can be both fun and informative. By paying close attention to the smallest details, the museum ensures that children are constantly learning, even in the most playful settings. This approach not only captivates young learners but also supports their developmental milestones in a subtle yet impactful way.

The Great Lakes Children's Museum was the perfect rainy day activity for our crew. We got to watch the kids creativity and curiosity blossom through hands-on activities. Visitors can explore a variety of interactive exhibits that cater to different interests and ages, ranging from science and technology to arts and culture.

For budding scientists, there are different exhibits that focus on physics, chemistry, and natural sciences, encouraging exploration through fun experiments and demonstrations. Within the Waves of Gravity exhibit, plastic tubes are magnetically connected to a metal wall. Guests have the opportunity to arrange and rearrange the tubes in various configurations, then release a ball at the top to observe its journey through the course.

Art enthusiasts can engage in activities that promote self-expression and artistic development. In addition to the craft table, there was also an area set up as a theater so kids can put on a puppet show.

The museum also has a specific section for even the youngest of guests. I was able to sit in The Hatchery with my two youngest children (a 4 month old and a 3 year old) without having to worry about older kids running and trampling us. One of my favorite parts of this section was the magnetic walls. Here children could match shapes based on size and color, as well as add animals in the forest.

With its welcoming atmosphere and commitment to learning through play, The Great Lakes Children's Museum provides a memorable and enriching experience for children and families visiting Northern Michigan. It's a place where curiosity is encouraged, imaginations soar, and lifelong learning begins.

Great Lakes Children’s Museum has been a beloved cornerstone of the Traverse City community for 18 years, providing a unique, play-based learning environment that fosters curiosity and creativity in children. As a nonprofit and tax-exempt educational organization, their mission has always been to lay a strong foundation for lifelong learning through engaging, hands-on experiences. However, significant changes are on the horizon.

This summer marks the final months in their cherished space. Despite its modest and somewhat weathered appearance, the museum is a treasure trove of learning materials and exhibits that local teachers and families deeply cherish. Come September, they will be relocating to a temporary location for 3-5 years while working on building a brand-new, state-of-the-art Children’s Museum. This move is not just a necessity but a stepping stone towards expanding capacity to inspire and educate even more young minds.

We dedicated most of the day here and would have stayed longer if not for our lunch arrangements with the rest of our family. I completely grasp why the community has cherished and made great use of the current space. It was a privilege to witness the enchantment of their museum, and I am eagerly rooting for their future endeavors!
